Passau was a premier European sword-manufacturing hub during the Renaissance and early modern period, roughly the 15th through 17th centuries, and its blades were highly prized for their quality. Some were stamped with the famous Passau Wolf mark and circulated for generations through trans-Saharan trade routes that brought European steel into Sudan, Chad, and the surrounding regions.
