This extraordinary Electrum Stater minted at Cyzicus in Mysia circa 550–500 BC stands as a powerful relic of early Greek numismatics and maritime wealth. Struck in naturally occurring electrum, a precious alloy of gold and silver, this piece represents both economic prestige and artistic sophistication from one of the ancient world’s most influential trading cities. Coins of Cyzicus were widely recognized in antiquity for their high intrinsic value and distinctive designs, making them among the most desirable early issues for collectors of archaic Greek coinage.

The obverse features a compelling image of a Siren holding a tunny fish, an emblem deeply tied to Cyzicus’ prosperity and maritime dominance. The tunny fish symbolized the city’s thriving fishing and trade industry, while the Siren, a mythological creature blending woman and bird, embodied both beauty and peril, themes prevalent in Greek art and storytelling. The engraving demonstrates remarkable archaic artistry, with careful detailing that reflects the technical mastery of early die engravers. The reverse displays a bold quadripartite incuse square, a hallmark of early Greek minting technique that emphasizes both geometric balance and structural integrity.

Cyzicus occupied a strategic position along the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara, functioning as a major commercial bridge between Europe and Asia. Its electrum staters were widely accepted for high-value transactions across the Mediterranean world. This example offers not only intrinsic precious metal appeal but also profound historical resonance from the dawn of coinage. A captivating and museum-worthy representation of archaic Greek civilization, this is a premier acquisition for advanced collectors of ancient numismatics.

Graded Very Fine with a Strike 4/5 and Surface 5/5, this stater showcases remarkable preservation for its age. The Siren's figure remains clear, and the overall surface quality is exceptional for an ancient coin. The balance of its detailed design and historical context makes it a must-have for any serious collector of ancient Greek coinage.
