This impressive Viking or Crusader-period sword dates approximately from 1000-1200 AD and represents the transitional era between the late Viking Age and the age of the Crusades. The sword features a classic Oakeshott Style B1 pommel paired with a Style 1 crossguard, forms commonly associated with military swords of the 11th and 12th centuries. Most notably, the blade retains an engraved fuller bearing what appears to read "LL Z A X TT" or possibly "LL Z Δ X TT". Such inscriptions are highly desirable and often represent maker's marks, devotional symbols, ownership marks, or symbolic characters whose meanings have been lost to time. The sword has been professionally preserved and remains an exceptional study piece from one of the most important periods of medieval military history.

The centuries between 1000 and 1200 witnessed profound changes throughout Europe. Viking raiders gradually evolved into settled kingdoms while Crusader armies marched eastward to the Holy Land. The swords of this period reflect that transition, retaining many characteristics of earlier Viking weapons while developing into the knightly arming swords that would dominate medieval warfare. Inscribed blades are particularly fascinating because they provide a rare glimpse into the beliefs, identities, and traditions of the craftsmen and warriors who carried them. Similar inscribed swords can be found in major museum collections and remain among the most studied examples of medieval arms.

Adding further interest, this sword was acquired in Wolin, Poland, one of the most significant Viking archaeological centers in Northern Europe and the site of the renowned annual Slav and Viking Festival. Wolin has long been associated with the legendary Viking trading center of Jomsborg and remains one of the most important locations for the study of Viking Age history. Combining its engraved fuller, transitional Viking-to-Crusader form, professional preservation, and notable acquisition provenance, this sword represents an outstanding artifact from a transformative era of European history.

Provenance: Acquired in 2024 at the Slav and Viking Festival in Wolin, Poland, one of the most important Viking historical sites in Northern Europe. Professionally preserved and stabilized.
