This US Civil War Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword, marked Wester & Co. (Isaac Wester, Solingen, Germany, operated c.1820-1870), is a fine example of the Roman short sword style. The guard features the Swiss arsenal mark, ZZ in shield (Zurich ZeughausZ) over '50.'. This lot includes the original metal scabbard, hanger, and belt with flaming bomb and crossed cannon buckles, a rare combination not often found in this condition.

Wester & Co., led by Isaac Wester, was a prominent sword maker based in Solingen, Germany, known for producing high-quality military swords from approximately 1820 to 1870. The Model 1832 was standard issue for US artillery units, featuring a short, heavy blade designed for close combat. The Swiss arsenal mark, ZZ in shield, indicates that the sword was inspected and approved by Swiss military standards, adding to its rarity and historical value. The cross shield marking is a distinctive feature often associated with Swiss military equipment.

The accompanying belt is crafted from leather and still securely holds the sword. It features brass buckles with flaming bomb and crossed cannon motifs, reflecting the period's military gear. These swords were used extensively by artillerymen during the Civil War, making them significant artifacts of American military history.

Dimensions: Approx. Sword (Sheathed) is 26” L x 4” W | Blade is 19" L | Belt is 39” L x 7” W
