This rare and highly desirable WWII German Polizei sports shirt, named “E. H.” and retained as a veteran bring-back, is a complete original example of the police athletic uniform worn during the Third Reich period. The shirt retains its machine-woven, second pattern wreathed police eagle, executed in green threads with out-stretched wings and a canted black swastika in its talons, all set on a woven white rayon base. The eagle’s wingspan measures approximately 21 cm from tip to tip. This is a nice untouched example in good but used condition, with that unmistakable period look collectors value in surviving uniform material.

Physical fitness was considered a prime concern of the German police establishment, and each new recruit was issued a specific sports uniform consisting of a pullover tank-top style shirt, navy blue or white short pants, and athletic shoes. It is generally believed that regulations concerning police sports dress were first formally addressed by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler on June 25, 1936, in an effort to bring about uniformity in dress for police organizations throughout the country. Originally, the sports shirt was worn with the second pattern police eagle in light green threads from approximately June 1936 to May 1945, until regulations of October 1937 altered the eagle color to dark green. Further regulations of February 1, 1938 standardized the sports uniform for all police personnel.

Officers were distinguished from NCOs by the addition of a green stripe around the collar of the sports shirt. Of note, the German Police had no enlisted ranks, with the lowest rank being Unterwachtmeister, equivalent to the German Army rank of Unteroffizier. Regulations of October 30, 1942 discontinued issue of the sports uniform for NCOs, with reinstatement intended only upon the successful conclusion of the war. With its named association, vet bring-back provenance, complete second pattern police eagle, and untouched used condition, this is a rare and historically important piece of German police uniform history.

Provenance: Named “E. H.” and retained as a veteran bring-back.
