This rare and evocative early Iron Age Cimmerian spade-shaped short sword dates to approximately the 8th-7th century BC and represents a powerful and archaic form of ancient edged weaponry. Forged entirely of iron, the sword features the distinctive broad, leafless, spade-like blade profile associated with early steppe and proto-classical martial traditions. The blade widens dramatically through the cutting body before tapering subtly toward the tip, while the pronounced, elongated tang was designed to accept organic grip materials, likely wood, horn, or bone, long since lost to time. The surface displays deep, stable oxidation and ancient patination consistent with great age, preserving the unmistakable silhouette and early forging character of a true battlefield relic.

The Cimmerians were a formidable nomadic warrior culture active across the Pontic steppe, Anatolia, and the fringes of the early Mediterranean world. Renowned for their mobility and aggressive warfare, their weapon forms exerted influence across neighboring cultures through both conflict and contact. Spade-shaped swords such as this example represent a transitional Iron Age design, optimized for devastating chopping and slashing blows rather than the thrust-centric forms that would later dominate classical Roman arms. These weapons predate the standardized Roman gladius and reflect an experimental and adaptive period in ancient warfare, when iron technology was still evolving and regional styles remained highly distinctive.

Surviving iron swords from this early period are exceptionally scarce, as iron corrodes rapidly and few examples endure in collectible condition. This piece offers collectors and historians a tangible link to the formative centuries of Iron Age combat and cross-cultural influence between nomadic steppe warriors and emerging classical civilizations. Its bold form, undeniable age, and rarity make it a standout artifact, ideal for advanced collections focused on ancient arms, early metallurgy, or the origins of European warfare. Pieces of this caliber are seldom encountered on the open market and represent a true opportunity to acquire a museum-worthy ancient weapon.
