This remarkable one-of-a-kind piece is a historically layered World War II relic: a captured Nazi flag, boldly hand-signed by members of the U.S. Army's Battery A, 254th Forward Artillery (F.A.) Communication Section. In addition, a WW2 U.S. Navy Signalman Striker Patch has been sewn directly onto the flag, suggesting collaboration between Army and Navy units during the capture of this enemy standard. The full inscription reads: “Communication Section, Btry A, 254th F.A.”, and is surrounded by handwritten names of American servicemen, many of whom also listed their hometowns, including cities in Ohio and Indiana.

This flag was likely taken as a trophy during combat operations and represents a unified capture effort, possibly involving joint Army-Navy action during a beach landing or advance where naval fire support was active. The red Nazi banner, centered with a printed white roundel and swastika, remains vivid and structurally sound, made even more personal and poignant by the surviving autographs of its liberators.

Accompanying the flag is an extraordinary additional piece of ephemera: an original wartime letter signed in print by Lieutenant General Omar N. Bradley, Commander of the Twelfth Army Group. The letter, addressed to a soldier named Bragg J.W., offers instructions for U.S. conduct in newly occupied German territory. Bradley’s letter reminds troops not to persecute civilians, but rather to show the moral superiority of democracy and responsibility by avoiding the hatred that fueled Nazism. The tone and message of the letter are a powerful complement to the flag, juxtaposing victory with restraint.

Together, the signed flag and letter form a deeply evocative World War II display set, highlighting not just conquest, but the spirit of American military professionalism and unity across branches. Rarely do such tangible pieces of frontline cooperation and ideological messaging survive together. A superbly rare and one of a kind offering for WWII collectors and historians alike!

Provenance: From a private U.S. collection; believed to have originated with the family of one of the named artillerymen.

Dimensions: Flag approx. 18" x 13"; Omar Bradley letter approx. 5" x 7.5"
