We are excited to offer this rare and elegant decorated Maximilian grosses kriegsmesser, circa 1520, a museum-condition early 16th-century war knife of exceptional quality, originality, and visual command. Described as being as original as the day it was made, this above-ground example represents an extraordinary survival in a category where many known examples are excavated or heavily compromised. The term grosses kriegsmesser translates from German as “large” or “great war knife,” and this form occupies one of the most distinctive and charismatic positions in late medieval and early Renaissance European edged weaponry. Measuring approximately 98.5 cm overall, this is a major sword-length weapon with the elegance, scale, and condition expected of a world-class collection piece.

The weapon is constructed with a slightly curved single-edged blade terminating in an upward-turning point, giving it the powerful cutting profile associated with the kriegsmesser tradition. At the ricasso are triple cross marks with a maker’s mark of three dots above, while the reverse bears several star and circle marks. The horizontal guard is slightly swelling and of square cross-section, with two narrow linear gutters and an upwardly curved crossguard on the obverse. The handle is constructed with iron edging and scale decoration, terminating in an integral bird’s-head pommel. The grip scales are black and white checkered on both sides, formed from polished bone and horn, and secured by three carved iron rivets on each side. The result is a weapon of striking personality, combining martial practicality with refined Maximilian-era design.

The grosses kriegsmesser was especially popular in Hungary and found strong adoption in Germany during the 15th and 16th centuries, where it became a serious weapon of war. Its single-edged blade and often pronounced curvature place it conceptually close to the saber, whose influence is believed to have entered Eastern and Central Europe through Central Asian nomadic traditions as early as the 6th century. The kriegsmesser is generally understood to have moved westward from the Hungarian-Bohemian region or present-day Hungary. Some examples feature hooks or bird’s-beak pommels, others have no defined pommel, and some, as here, incorporate the pommel into the tang itself.

The Maximilian association is especially important. Emperor Maximilian I was notably fond of kriegsmessers, and three examples are preserved in the Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer under inventory numbers A123, A145, and A173. In the famous woodcut Triumph of Maximilian, soldiers are depicted carrying kriegsmessers and shields, and Maximilian referred to these troops as Gefecht or Fenders. This places the form directly within the military image-making, tournament culture, and armed retinues of one of the most influential rulers of the early 16th century.

A comparable example is held in the world-famous Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria, underscoring the rarity and institutional importance of the type. The present sword also comes from a renowned Austrian collection that began after the Second World War, giving it distinguished old-collection provenance in addition to its exceptional condition and rarity. Above-ground kriegsmessers of this quality are extraordinarily difficult to acquire, and decorated examples with preserved horn and bone grip scales, marked blade, integral bird’s-head pommel, and such strong overall presence are seldom encountered on the market.

Provenance: From a renowned Austrian collection begun after World War II. From the private collection of an internationally recognized arms and armor authority, adding exceptional scholarly and collector significance.

Dimensions: Approximately 98.5 cm overall length.
