This compelling and historically significant German WWI / Early Third Reich award grouping centers around a documented Bronze Hindenburg Honor Cross of the World War I (Ehrenkreuz fur Frontkampfer), marked 0.6., awarded to Max Manthey. Included with the medal is its original award document, dated Berlin, September 10, 1935, along with the recipient’s original identity card featuring his photograph and official state police stamp. The grouping presents as an exceptionally personal and historically intact survivor set, directly linking a First World War veteran’s decorated military service to the early administrative machinery of the emerging Third Reich.

The Hindenburg Cross, officially instituted in 1934 by President Paul von Hindenburg, was the first standardized service decoration of the Third Reich and was created to honor German veterans of the First World War. The version included here, awarded to front-line combat veterans, represented a formal recognition of wartime sacrifice while simultaneously serving as an early symbolic bridge between Imperial German military legacy and the new National Socialist state. The award document included in this grouping bears the authority of the police administration in Spandau, Berlin, at a critical early period in Nazi consolidation of state institutions.

Of particular historical significance is the connection to Wolf-Heinrich Graf von Helldorff, who had been appointed Berlin Police President in July 1935 and thus held jurisdiction over Spandau at the time this document was issued. A prominent SA-Obergruppenfuhrer and long-standing Nazi Party member, Helldorff played a direct role in the Nazification of Berlin’s police apparatus and the implementation of early anti-Semitic state policy. Though later executed for his involvement in the July 20, 1944 plot against Hitler, his role during this early period makes this grouping especially compelling as a documented intersection between a decorated Imperial German veteran and the rapidly transforming political structure of Nazi Germany. An excellent researchable and highly displayable historical grouping.
