This outstanding Imperial German World War I M17 helmet reissued for World War II Kriegsmarine use is a fantastic and highly characterful example of German military equipment carried across two generations of conflict. Originally produced as a World War I M17 Stahlhelm, this helmet was later repurposed for use during the Second World War and fitted with a single gold Kriegsmarine eagle decal on the left side. The decal is heavily worn but remains visible, retaining approximately 15 to 25 percent of its original presence, giving the helmet an unmistakable naval connection and tremendous display character. The shell shows signs of having been lacquered at some point for preservation. The exterior surface is salty and age-worn, with cracking, spidering, scuffs, finish loss, and period surface wear throughout, but it retains the powerful original look and profile collectors want in a reissued World War I helmet.

The helmet retains its original M17 form, with the classic heavy steel shell, strong contours, and original side hardware still present. The rivets and bolts show honest age-related wear from long-term storage, handling, and period use. The rear bolt is coming loose but remains affixed to the helmet, while the remaining bolts are still in good order and consistent with the expected wear on a helmet of this age and service history. The shell itself displays the kind of surface aging one would expect from a helmet that began life in the First World War and was later reissued into the Second World War, including lacquered preservation surface, worn paint, spidering, patina, and a visibly aged naval decal. While the decal is far from complete, its surviving gold tone and placement on the left side still give the helmet a clear and highly appealing Kriegsmarine display presence.

The interior is especially important, as the helmet retains what appears to be its original liner along with its accompanying chinstrap. The liner is present and displays well, with the interior marking on the liner remaining easily legible. The interior stitching appears sound, and the metal or aluminum inner liner band remains in place with strong period character. The chinstrap is also present, adding greatly to the completeness and desirability of the piece. Many reissued helmets have lost their liners, chinstraps, or interior components over the decades, so the survival of the liner system, liner marking, stitching, liner band, and chinstrap makes this example far more compelling than an empty shell. The interior and exterior together create a helmet that feels complete, untouched in presentation, and full of authentic historical surface.
