This is a genuine German World War I Saxony Officer’s Pickelhaube—a spiked helmet worn by one of Saxony’s fourteen-line infantry regiments as of 1897. Constructed with a leather body and adorned with gilt brass fittings, the helmet features the iconic Saxon wappen: a gold sunburst plate with a silver coat of arms of Saxony at its center, topped by an open (voided) officer’s crown. Both the officer stars and spike base remain intact, with the spike mounted on a classic officer’s screw-post base for detachment. The original Saxon-style officer cockades (kokarden) are present, reflecting the non-Prussian regional variant used also by Württemberg, Hesse-Darmstadt, Baden, and Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

This WW1 example shows some visible cracking and spidering to the upper left portion of the leather shell, and the metal chinstrap is missing. However, the helmet’s key officer-grade attributes—gilt furniture, sunburst wappen, and non-Prussian kokarden—remain intact and correct. These Saxon helmets are far rarer than their Prussian counterparts, and officer examples are particularly scarce due to smaller regiment sizes and limited peacetime production prior to the outbreak of the Great War.

This piece comes from a large Austin, Texas estate collection, formerly belonging to a late U.S. One-Star General who served post-WWII in Germany. The collection was acquired in full, and this helmet is one of its standout Imperial relics. A unique opportunity to own a regional officer’s pickelhaube—complete with its distinct Saxon identity and wartime provenance.
