This American Revolutionary War era 18th-century partisan head and spear-point style halberd is a powerful polearm component with strong base rings and long metal straps securing it to the wooden haft. The head features a spear-point profile with partisan or halberd characteristics, giving it the commanding visual form associated with 18th-century rank, guard, and battlefield polearms. The mounting system includes eight riveted metal straps, with one rivet missing, extending down the haft to provide strength, stability, and reinforcement. This construction gives the piece a serious military presence and suggests practical durability rather than purely ceremonial manufacture.

Partisans, halberds, spontoons, and related polearms remained important in 18th-century military culture, even as firearms dominated the battlefield. These arms were carried by officers, sergeants, guards, and specialized formations, serving both as weapons and as visible emblems of command. Their long shafts, reinforced socket systems, and projecting blades allowed them to be used for formation control, defense of colors, guard duty, and close-quarters action. In the Revolutionary War era, polearms still carried the older martial language of rank and authority while retaining practical battlefield utility.

Halberds were carried by British sergeants of foot (infantry) companies as both a weapon and a badge of rank. Sergeants used the long polearms to physically keep the lines of soldiers straight and prod them into firing formation. Americans used halberds far less frequently, though George Washington originally ordered American Continental Army officers and sergeants to carry halberds. He wanted the American troops to mimic the professionalism and appearance of the British military. More likely the American troops carried pikes, spears, and more crude polearm weapons. This is an impressive and highly visual Revolutionary War era polearm, especially appealing due to its reinforced haft construction and long riveted straps. The spear-point halberd form, strong base rings, and surviving wooden haft mounting give the piece a rugged and authentic character that would display beautifully in any Colonial American, Revolutionary War, or 18th-century arms collection.

Condition: One rivet missing from the haft strap assembly.
