This extraordinary American Revolutionary War silver hilt lion head officer’s sword is a museum-grade American and colonial-era edged weapon, hallmarked 1765 and measuring approximately 32 1/2 inches overall with a 26 1/4 inch blade. Originally made during the French & Indian War period and carried forward into the American Revolutionary War era, this sword was custom made for a wealthy and high-ranking American officer. The silver hilt is fashioned with a rare animal lion head form, giving the piece the unmistakable presence of a privately commissioned officer’s sword rather than a common martial sidearm. Less than 1 percent of swords made during the Revolutionary War period are understood to have silver hilts, placing this example among the rarest and most elite class of American Revolutionary edged weapons. Its provenance is impeccable, coming from the personal collection of Norm Flayderman, one of the most respected names in the history of American arms collecting.

Silver hilt swords from the Revolutionary generation were never ordinary weapons. They were costly, personal, and deeply symbolic objects carried by men of status, command, and means during the formative era of the American nation. A 1765 hallmark places this sword directly in the charged decade between the French & Indian War and the outbreak of the War of Independence, a period when colonial military experience, British imperial authority, and American resistance were beginning to converge. The lion head hilt speaks to high taste and custom craftsmanship, while the sword’s American officer association places it within the material culture of leadership during the struggle that gave birth to the United States.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime Revolutionary War sword, the kind of object that belongs in the conversation of great American arms. Its 1765 hallmark, silver lion head hilt, elite officer ownership profile, French & Indian War to Revolutionary War period use, and Norm Flayderman provenance make it far more than a beautiful sword. It is a work of art, a symbol of command, and a tangible survivor from the founding age of the United States. Offered during the historic lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary, this is one of the premier American Revolutionary War edged weapons to come to market through Treasure Trove Auctions.

Provenance: From the personal collection of Norm Flayderman.

Dimensions: Approximately 32 1/2 inches overall, with a 26 1/4 inch blade.
