This exceptional 19th-century German hunting dagger is a beautifully crafted and highly decorative example complete with its original scabbard and portepee. The dagger features a remarkable triple-etched presentation blade adorned with detailed hunting scenes on both sides. The obverse depicts a hunter standing with a short rifle near the ricasso, while the reverse showcases a hunting hound alongside additional game animals and woodland motifs. The spine is further embellished with elegant foliate vine engraving, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship invested in this piece. The blade remains bright with beautifully preserved etching throughout, showing only minor freckling toward the tip.

The hilt is equally impressive, featuring a brass S-shaped crossguard terminating in boar's heads and a large shell-form languet depicting a feeding stag. The pommel is cast with a raised running wolf motif, while the stag antler grip is decorated with brass acorn ornaments. A woven portepee remains attached to the grip, further enhancing the dagger's presentation. Generous traces of original gilding remain visible across the brass fittings, which have developed an attractive age patina over time. The dagger is accompanied by its original leather scabbard fitted with ornate brass mounts. The upper mount features a boar's head stud on the obverse, while the reverse bears a presentation inscription translating to "In Memory of the Arnsberger Hunting and Shooting Club 1896". The drag is additionally decorated with an engraved scene of a feeding stag, matching the hunting theme carried throughout the piece.

German hunting daggers occupied a unique role within the traditions of European hunting culture. Beyond their practical use in the field, they served as symbols of status, membership in hunting societies, and participation in shooting clubs and sporting associations. Presentation examples such as this were often awarded to respected members or commissioned to commemorate significant events and anniversaries. The combination of elaborate blade etching, animal motifs, gilded fittings, portepee, and dated presentation inscription transforms this dagger from a simple hunting weapon into a personalized artifact reflecting the rich hunting traditions of late 19th-century Germany.

Complete presentation hunting daggers of this quality are highly sought after by collectors due to their artistry, symbolism, and historical appeal. With its dated 1896 inscription, richly etched blade, antler grip, original scabbard, and portepee, this is a particularly attractive example that would serve as a centerpiece in any collection of German hunting weapons, sporting arms, or decorative edged weapons.
