This excellent antique Nepalese Long Leaf Kukri is a highly attractive 19th to early 20th century Gurkha fighting knife retaining its original scabbard and two smaller companion utility knives. The large curved blade displays the classic long leaf kukri profile, with a broad forward-weighted form, pronounced belly, clipped spine near the grip, and traditional notch at the base of the cutting edge. The wooden grip has a flared pommel and traditional ringed center section, giving the piece strong Nepalese form and excellent display presence. The blade shows age, patina, spotting, and field wear throughout, but the most exciting feature is the visible signed or inscribed blade, with script appearing along the upper portion of the blade near the hilt. This inscription is a major point of interest and may provide important research value for the next collector.
The kukri, or khukuri, is one of the most recognizable fighting knives in the world and is deeply associated with Nepalese martial tradition and Gurkha service. Its distinctive inward-curving blade was designed for powerful chopping and close combat use, while also serving as a practical field tool. Long Leaf kukris are especially desirable due to their large size, elegant blade form, and strong connection to 19th century and early 20th century Nepalese military production. Many examples were carried by Nepalese troops and Gurkha soldiers and later became highly collected as symbols of South Asian military history, colonial-era conflict, and traditional edged weapon craftsmanship.
This example is especially compelling because it retains its dark leather-covered scabbard, metal tip fitting, suspension elements, cord wrap, and two smaller companion knives, commonly associated with the traditional kukri set. The inscription on the blade appears to be in Devanagari-style script and should be carefully reviewed by informed bidders, as it may relate to an arsenal, owner, official dedication, or Nepalese authority marking. The combination of a large long leaf blade, signed surface, original scabbard, and companion knives makes this a strong and highly displayable offering for collectors of Nepalese kukris, Gurkha weapons, South Asian arms, ethnographic edged weapons, antique fighting knives, and 19th century military history.
