This 17th-century European blunderbuss is an ornate early firearm decorated with mother of pearl and green ivory or jade-style inlays. The piece comes from a French American collector and museum curator, adding important provenance and collecting context. The decorative inlay work gives the firearm a striking presentation, elevating it beyond a purely utilitarian weapon and into the realm of high-status arms. Though additional measurements, lock details, maker marks, and condition notes were not provided, the 17th-century attribution and decorative treatment make it a visually compelling early firearm.

The blunderbuss was one of the most recognizable short-range firearms of the 17th and 18th centuries, valued for its flared muzzle and powerful close-quarters effect. It was used aboard ships, in coaches, in homes, and by guards or travelers where intimidation and immediate stopping power were important. Ornately inlaid examples reflect the taste for embellished arms among wealthy owners, military officers, merchants, and collectors, particularly in an era when firearms could serve as both weapons and symbols of status.

This blunderbuss has the presence of an old-world collector’s piece, combining early firearm technology with rich decorative surfaces and museum-linked provenance. The mother of pearl and green inlays give it a memorable visual identity, making it a strong acquisition for collectors of antique firearms, European arms, decorative weapons, and early gunmaking history.

Provenance: From a French American collector and museum curator.
